Background Information:
This small bronze seal matrix belongs to the tradition of personal and commercial seals used throughout medieval and early post-medieval Europe. The flat sealing face carries a merchant’s mark, while the reverse rises into a handle terminating in a pierced suspension loop. This practical construction allowed the matrix to be carried on a cord or chain and kept readily available for use.

Seal matrices were used to impress a distinctive design into wax attached to documents, correspondence, packages or transactions. While heraldic seals were closely associated with noble and institutional identity, merchant’s marks provided traders, craftsmen and other individuals with recognisable personal or commercial symbols. Such marks could function as identifying devices in a society in which written signatures were not yet universally employed.

Bronze matrices were cast and subsequently finished by hand, with the design on the sealing surface cut in intaglio so that it appeared in relief when impressed into wax. The compact form, integral handle and suspension loop reflect an established and practical tradition of seal manufacture rather than an ornamental object without function.

The use of merchant’s marks was closely connected with the expanding urban economy and commercial networks of the later Middle Ages. During the 15th and 16th centuries, merchants and craftsmen operated through increasingly extensive regional and international trading systems, making reliable forms of personal and commercial identification important. This seal matrix forms a tangible connection to that world of late medieval commerce and documentation, in which small personal objects could play a direct role in everyday business and communication.
