Three Japanese Wooden Lacquer Trays with Maki-e Decoration
Attributed to the Meiji–Taishō Period
With Two Paper Boxes and Inscribed Paper Wrappings

A charming group of three Japanese wooden lacquer trays: one depicting Mount Fuji, pine and flying cranes, and a matching pair in two sizes decorated with overlapping fan motifs.

MOUNT FUJI TRAY

Against a deep reddish-brown, subtly mottled lacquer ground, Mount Fuji rises behind a gracefully branching pine tree, with two cranes flying above.

The mountain is rendered with softly shaded gold-coloured decoration, while fine lines define the pine needles and the birds’ wings. The spacious composition and warm gold-coloured rim give the tray an elegant presence.

FAN-PATTERN PAIR

The two smaller trays share a coordinated design of overlapping fan-shaped panels, decorated with pine and bamboo.

Fine gold-coloured lines and scattered decorative details stand out against the dark lacquer backgrounds. Matching gold-coloured rims bring the pair together.

PERIOD AND ACCOMPANYING PAPERS

The trays are attributed to the Meiji–Taishō period, based on their workmanship and the accompanying packaging, including aged Japanese paper, handwritten brush inscriptions and a right-to-left stamped heading.

The Mount Fuji wrapping bears the inscriptions “富士山 松鶴 蒔絵” (Mount Fuji, pine and cranes, maki-e) and “九寸角形盆” (nine-sun square tray). It also carries the wording “早川翠松堂用盆” (tray for Hayakawa Suishōdō).

An accompanying stamped paper label includes “請合”, a traditional assurance wording, and “堅地” (kataji), referring to a durable lacquer foundation.

The old boxes and inscribed wrappings add character and historical interest to the group.

■ Seller's Story

Hello from Japan.

My father ran a second-hand and antique shop, and I began selling internationally by offering items from his shop.

I have always loved old things myself. Today, I enjoy discovering beautiful and interesting vintage Japanese items and sharing them with people around the world. I choose each piece for the qualities that catch my eye—its craftsmanship, design, or individual character.

I personally inspect, photograph, describe, and carefully pack each item. I hope you find something here that you will enjoy and treasure in your own home.
