Bertrand Russell – The ABC of Atoms – 1923 (First Edition)

An increasingly scarce and historically significant copy of the first edition of Bertrand Russell’s foundational introduction to nuclear physics, written for the layperson. Published in London by Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. in 1923, this book reflects the remarkable era of scientific discovery surrounding the nature of the atom immediately following World War I.

Russell, a Nobel Prize laureate primarily celebrated for his philosophical and mathematical works, displays his legendary ability to explain deeply complex, cutting-edge theories—such as Bohr’s theory of the hydrogen spectrum, relativity, and quantum mechanics—in exceptionally clear and elegant English.

First Edition Rarity: This is the authentic 1923 first impression, a highly sought-after title within Russell's less common popular science bibliographies.

Condition Report:

Format: Hardcover, original purple cloth over boards.

Exterior: Fair to Good. The original purple cloth on the main boards is largely intact with normal age-toning and a circular surface mark/stain near the upper edge. The cloth spine is heavily sunned/faded to a tan hue (a typical characteristic for this specific edition) with noticeable fraying and cloth loss at the head and tail of the backstrip.

Interior: Good. The binding remains firm. The inner text leaves are generally clean with light, uniform age-toning throughout. The front and rear endpapers show heavy browning/offsetting.

Annotations: A previous studious owner has made a few neat, brief annotations in pencil on the margins of some text pages.

Page Count: 175 pages.
Dimensions: Crown Octavo (approx. 19 cm x 13 cm / 7.5" x 5")
