⠀
A refined Japanese hanging scroll by Satō Kōka 佐藤光華 (1897–1944), depicting an elegant female figure in historical Heian-style costume beneath brilliant autumn maple leaves.
⠀
The composition combines the graceful figure with vivid seasonal colour. The woman is shown in a richly patterned yellow outer robe over pale blue garments, while red maple leaves form a striking accent behind her. The restrained landscape in the upper portion creates a large area of open space, giving the painting a calm and sophisticated vertical rhythm.
⠀
The facial expression is particularly delicate, with fine linear work around the eyes and features. The contrast between the pale complexion, brightly coloured costume and scarlet maple leaves gives the work a distinctly decorative Nihonga character.
⠀
Satō Kōka (1897–1944) was a Kyoto-born Japanese painter. His real name was Chōsaburō. He graduated from the painting department of the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts in 1916 and later from the Kyoto Municipal Special School of Painting in 1919. He studied under the important Nihonga painter Kikuchi Keigetsu 菊池契月.
⠀
Satō exhibited repeatedly in the official Bunten and Teiten exhibitions. His work Yumeutsutsu was first accepted at the 11th Bunten in 1917, and he later showed works in the Bunten, Teiten and Shin-Bunten exhibitions. In 1930, his work Kikujidō received recommendation status at the 11th Teiten. He was also associated with the Kōyōkai together with artists including Uemura Shōkō and Ikeda Yōson.
⠀
The painting is executed by hand on silk, signed 光華 (Kōka) and accompanied by a red artist’s seal. It is housed in a signed wooden storage box (tomobako).
