Background Information:
This bronze seal matrix is attributed to the late medieval or early post-medieval period, approximately the 15th–16th century. It features a circular sealing face engraved with a geometric device, interpreted as a possible merchant's mark. The upright handle terminates in a pierced trefoil-shaped loop, allowing the seal to be suspended from a cord or chain for convenient personal use.

During the late Middle Ages, personal seals were important instruments of identification and authentication. Merchants, craftsmen and other individuals used them to validate correspondence, commercial agreements, contracts and legal documents. By pressing the engraved surface into softened wax, the owner created a distinctive impression that served as a personal mark of authority and identity.

Merchant's marks were widely used throughout medieval European trading communities. Often composed of simple geometric lines, crosses and other distinctive symbols, they functioned as identifying devices for individual merchants or commercial households. Such marks were particularly associated with the growing commercial networks of the Low Countries, the German territories and the Hanseatic trading cities, where written agreements and the movement of goods played an increasingly important role.

Bronze seal matrices were manufactured by specialised metalworkers using established casting and engraving techniques. Their durable construction allowed repeated use over many years, while the individually engraved designs reflected the identity or professional activities of their owners. The precise interpretation of the engraved mark on this example remains uncertain.

This seal matrix forms a tangible connection to the commercial and administrative life of late medieval Europe, when personal seals played an essential role in establishing identity, confirming agreements and maintaining trust in everyday transactions.
