Houn Cast Kupfer-Vase mit Clematis – Hokkaido-Universität Präsentation, 1985 - Japan - Shōwa Zeit (1926-1989)

Houn Cast Copper Vase with Clematis – Hokkaido University Presentation, 1985

Item Description:
A Japanese cast copper vase decorated with a stylised clematis design, dating to 1985 (Showa 60).

The rounded, pear-shaped body rises into a slender neck and a broadly flared mouth, creating an elegant, balanced silhouette. The surface combines dark brown and olive-green tones with an irregular mottled pattern. Against this subdued background, gold-coloured floral details and pale outlines form a flowing composition of blossoms, leaves and curling tendrils.

This vase was presented by Hokkaido University to commemorate 20 years of service. The underside bears the Japanese inscription “北海道大学永年勤務者表彰20年” and the date “60.11.23”, corresponding to 23 November 1985. This commemorative inscription gives the piece a specific institutional history within Japan’s Showa period.

Accompanied by a wooden box bearing the inscription “鋳銅 花瓶” (cast copper vase), the maker’s name and red seals, together with a wooden display stand.

Artist:
Houn (峰雲).
The wooden box bears the inscription “峰雲作”, meaning “made by Houn”.
