Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung

Carved and polychromed wooden relief depicting Saint Andrew, Spain, circa 1600.

The relief shows Saint Andrew standing frontally, identifiable by the diagonal cross (saltire) at his side. He is depicted with a beard and dressed in a long mantle with pronounced, stylised folds. Above, two angels hold a draped canopy, framing the figure and reinforcing the devotional character of the composition. The surface retains a textured and punched ground with remnants of gilding, contributing to the decorative effect.

Carved in wood and originally polychromed and gilded, with visible traces of gold and underlying layers.

Saint Andrew is, according to the New Testament, the brother of Saint Peter and, according to tradition, the first bishop of Byzantium. He is also the patron saint of Amsterdam.

Condition: in worn condition with losses to polychromy and gilding, surface abrasion, small losses and old wormholes. Minor damages and age-related wear. With a later auction label on the reverse (Jean-Claude Anaf & Associé).

Dimensions: approx. 52.5 x 20 cm.
