Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung
Miniature Bronze Horseman – Guimbala Style – Mali – 6 cm
Origin / Attribution: Guimbala style, Inland Niger Delta region, Mali
Material: Cast copper alloy (bronze), with green and dark-brown oxidation patina
Dimensions: Length 6 cm × height 5.8 cm
Provenance: Persönlich im Mali vom heutigen Besitzer in den frühen 1990er Jahren gesammelt
Presumed age: Undetermined. Exact dating has not been established.
A delightful miniature bronze horseman, remarkable for its lively composition, rounded volumes and expressive modelling despite its very small dimensions.
The upright rider, with a long neck, simplified facial features and slightly projecting arms, sits upon a highly stylised horse. The animal's gracefully arched neck, rounded legs and distinctly modelled hooves create an almost playful silhouette, full of movement and character.
Particular attention has been given to the balance of the composition and the small details of the casting. The contrast between the vertical human figure and the flowing curves of the horse gives this miniature an unusually animated presence.
The surface displays a rich, irregular patina combining pale turquoise-green oxidation with darker brown and almost black areas, giving the bronze a striking archaeological appearance.
Kultureller Kontext
This miniature belongs stylistically to the tradition of small equestrian bronzes associated with the Guimbala region of Mali, in the Inland Niger Delta.
This artistic tradition developed particularly between the 12th and 16th centuries, a period marked by the flourishing of the great medieval West African empires, notably the Mali Empire.
The horse, closely associated with military power, prestige and political authority, became an important symbol in the region's artistic traditions. Small bronze horsemen, large Djenné terracotta figures and Dogon sculptures all bear witness to the significance of this equestrian imagery.
Comparable miniature bronzes have been attributed to this historical period, although related forms continued to be produced in later centuries. The precise age of the present example remains undetermined.
A Personal Note
This tiny horseman makes us smile every time we look at him. In barely six centimetres, the sculptor has managed to capture movement, confidence and an irresistible sense of mischief. Everything is wonderfully rounded, animated and slightly improbable. A miniature sculpture with a personality far larger than its size.
Zustand
