Beschreibung

This is a copper *yatate*—a traditional, portable writing implement that combines an inkwell and a holder for a writing brush.
During the Kamakura period, warriors would carry a small inkstone and a brush inside their *ebira* (quiver)—or, more specifically, a *yatate* (a container for arrows)—to be prepared for writing on the battlefield. Because the inkstone kept there was known as a "quiver inkstone" (*yatate no suzuri*), the entire portable writing kit eventually came to be called a *yatate*.
