Biography Matsubayashi Hanzan (1839–1867) Born in Chikuzen Province (present-day Fukuoka Prefecture) in 1839. His given name was Zen, his courtesy name Hakukō, and he was also known as Zen-no-shin and Ren-nosuke. A Confucian scholar of the Omura domain in Hizen, he studied under Asaka Gonsai at the Shōheikō academy. In 1859 he became head of the domain school Gokyōkan, and in 1862 he co-founded the Sōshōkōjuku academy in Osaka with Matsumoto Keidō. As a Sonnō (Revere the Emperor) advocate, he was active in his domain but was assassinated by pro-shogunate retainers on January 3, 1867, at the age of 29.

Biography

Matsubayashi Hanzan (1839–1867)
