This is a Noh mask of Zōchōten, a Buddhist guardian deity, one of the Four Heavenly Kings (Shitennō), who protects the southern direction and serves as a martial god fostering the prosperity of the Buddhist Law. Zōchōten (増長天, Zōchōten) 1. One of the Four Heavenly Kings in Buddhism In Buddhism, the four guardian deities who protect the Dharma are known as the Shitennō (Four Heavenly Kings). Each of them protects one of the four cardinal directions and serves under Taishakuten (Śakra/Indra). The Four Heavenly Kings are: Jikokuten (持国天, Dhṛtarāṣṭra): Guardian of the East Zōchōten (増長天, Virūḍhaka): Guardian of the South Kōmokuten (広目天, Virūpākṣa): Guardian of the West Tamonten/Bishamonten (多聞天 / 毘沙門天, Vaiśravaṇa): Guardian of the North 2.
