The chrysanthemum (kikumon) has been associated with the imperial family and is often seen in shrine and temple architecture. It is believed that this panel was made by reusing an older wooden board, with a layer of old documents or sutras applied as a base before being painted with the chrysanthemum crest. This technique was commonly seen around the Edo period, where scraps of paper or aged scriptures were glued together before being decorated. It was also not uncommon for the paper to be affixed in reverse, making the characters appear backward from the outside. The chrysanthemum crest with 16 petals is well known as an imperial emblem, but it was also used on shrine doors and ritual objects, suggesting that this piece may have some connection to the imperial court or religious institutions. The passage of time has left its mark on this piece, with visible discoloration, surface deterioration, and extensive flaking. The wood has numerous wormholes and significant chipping, adding to its aged character. Remnants of the repurposed paper script can still be seen, enhancing its historical depth. Wood dust is coming off from the surface. The support beams are fragile and may break. There are peeling areas, and some of the wooden planks are loose and may detach. Despite its weathered state, the warm orange hues of the chrysanthemum remain, offering a glimpse into its former elegance. This evocative piece carries the charm of imperfection and is an excellent find for those who appreciate genuine historical artifacts. Dimensions: approx.
