Order of the Black Star — an abolished colonial government award of France. It was established on December 1, 1889, in Porto-Novo (the current capital of the Republic of Benin) by the future King Toffa of Dahomey. On August 30, 1892, it received a new statute and on July 30, 1894, it was officially recognized by the French government as an award given for the spread of French influence in West Africa.
