Rare pair of antique woven wall tapestries commemorating the Franco-Russian Alliance of the late 19th century Each panel features a detailed woven portrait: one depicting Tsar Alexander Ill of Russia, and the other showing a French Republican leader (likely President Sadi Carnot). Both are richly framed with military and heraldic motifs - laurel leaves, crossed flags, armor, and national emblems ("RF" for République Française and the Russian double-headed eagle*) These pieces were likely produced in France around 1893, during or shortly after the visit of the Russian fleet to Toulon, celebrating the diplomatic friendship between Russia and France. Panels and Decorative Symbolism: The panels are surrounded by a rich decorative frieze and symbolic elements: Frame: along the edges — laurel branches, garlands of decorative twists, military attributes (uniforms, helmets, pieces of armor, possibly cannons or other naval elements). All elements are highlighted with gold thread, giving the panels a special luxury and expressiveness. Top section: a composition with national symbols. Above the French portrait — the inscription “RF” (République Française), flags, and coats of arms of the French Republic. Above the Russian portrait — the double-headed eagle, symbol of the Russian Empire. Bottom section: emblems, coats of arms, and shields. The French portrait features symbols of the French Republic, while the Russian portrait displays the coat of arms of the Russian Empire.
