Slightly over life-size, this rare bronze laqcuered and gilded Buddha hand once belonged to a monumental standing Buddha image. The rather muscular hand has fingers of equal length one of the many important marks of a Buddha as a supernatural being. During the Ayutthaya Period Buddha's images show more different gestures than in previous styles, popular became the Abhaya Mudra gesture, hand upright with handpalm facing outwards. This gesture has several different meanings, like, Buddha calming the ocean of endless desire, protection, peace, dispelling fear, evil and ignorance, or also, calling his relatives not to quarrel. The Abhaya Mudra gesture probably was long before Buddhism used it as a kind of universal language as a symbol of good intentions and friendship towards strangers.
