Ekkläsiale Altarüberzüge -1850 - Antik - Seide - 1850-1900

Set of 3 Ecclesiastical Silk Altar Covers – 2nd Half 19th Century, France. A beautiful set of three antique ecclesiastical altar covers (palls or chalice veils), dating from the second half of the 19th century, originating from France. Each piece is crafted from fine silk damask, richly decorated with woven floral and cross motifs, and finished with gilded brocade borders. The embroidery features gold and silver thread, adding a subtle metallic brilliance that reflects the light beautifully. Two of the covers are in white-gold tones with a cross in metallic thread; the third shows a splendid purple and gold floral brocade. These sacred textiles were originally used during the Catholic Mass to cover the chalice and paten, symbolising reverence and purity. The combination of white and purple corresponds to the liturgical colours for festive and penitential seasons respectively—an exquisite expression of 19th-century ecclesiastical craftsmanship. Details: Period: 2nd half 19th century Origin: France Material: silk damask with gold and silver metallic thread Dimensions: approx. 54 × 54 cm each Condition: good antique solid condition with minor age-related wear and light patina consistent with ceremonial use (see photos) Historical context: During the 19th century, French ecclesiastical textile workshops—particularly those in Lyon and Paris—were renowned for their luxurious silk damasks and metallic-thread embroidery. Such fabrics were commissioned by churches and monasteries across Europe and remain highly collectible today for their fine quality and devotional artistry. A refined set of devotional textiles—high-end quality, and a wonderful addition for collectors of religious art or antique vestments.
