A superb ancient Egyptian naturalistic scarab carved from bright orange carnelian. The scarab features an arched obverse with a detailed head and clypeus. Horizontal incisions mark the prothorax and elytra, which is also marked with vertical striations, evenly spread across the whole surface. The underside is carved to depict the natural reverse of the beetle. There is a ridged suspension loop beneath. Superb example. The Egyptians wore amulets alongside other pieces of jewellery. They were decorative, but also served a practical purpose, being considered to bestow power and protection upon the wearer. Many of the amulets have been found inside the wrappings of mummies, as they were used to prepare the deceased for the afterlife. The use of carnelian as a material further linked these scarabs to the sun god, Ra, as the stone’s flame-like colour was connected to the solar cult. The semi-precious stone was used frequently by the Egyptians of all social classes, through Dynastic Egypt until the Roman period. It was used abundantly for amulets, beads, small figurines and inlay works and it was prized despite its ample use.
