A monumental (H: 62,2 cm) Chinese 'Rose Medallion' baluster vase. China, Qing dynasty, mid 19th century. Most probably Xianfeng (1850-1861, 咸豐) period, considering quality and style of decoration. Rare! Finely potted in baluster shape, with strongly everted, flared top-rim, four gilt temple lions (Foo-dogs) applied to the neck and four golded kui dragons to the shoulder. Extensively decorated body with dominating two large panels depicting interior court scenes, one with Emperor surrounded by officials and Mandarins; other with Mandaring around the large planter with pink lotos, in lower part wavy sea with water-creature and immortals; both framed by mtyhical creatures and bats, alternating with censer- and fruit-shaped cartouches depicting interior scenes with Mandarins. Panels surrounded by flowers, butterflies and Chinese symbols (in ribbons) on light celadon ground. Wide band of foliage and blossom on gilt ground above the foot, similar but with four flower-reserves inside the mouth. Neck with two interior Mandarin scenes framed by bats.
