Gelbe glasierte Teeschale — Ein goldener Behälter für ruhige Momente - Keramik - Gorosuke Asami Ⅵ 六代浅見五郎助 (b.1951) - Japan - Heisei Zeit (1989-heute)

This is an elegant Japanese tea bowl (chawan) crafted by the renowned ceramic artist Gorosuke Asami Ⅵ (六代浅見五郎助), a respected member of a distinguished lineage of Kyoto-based potters. The bowl is finished in a classic yellow glaze (黄釉, ōyū)—a traditional glaze technique that brings out a warm, amber-toned surface with natural variations in tone and texture. The bowl features a subtly flared lip, finely thrown concentric ridges along the outer wall, and a foot with an unglazed base, displaying a contrast of earthy clay and lustrous glaze. Natural iron spots (kannyū) and tonal gradients on the surface enhance the visual appeal, imparting a sense of age, depth, and rustic sophistication that aligns with the aesthetic values of wabi-sabi in the Japanese tea tradition. The interior is smooth and open, ideal for whisking matcha, and the balance in hand is superb—indicative of the artist’s deep understanding of functional beauty. On the underside, the piece is signed with the artist’s seal mark, and it comes complete with the original tomobako (signed wooden box) and protective cloth, both of which confirm its authenticity and care in presentation. This tea bowl is not only a fine example of traditional Japanese ceramic artistry, but also a highly collectible item that reflects the continuity and refinement of the tea ceremony culture. About Yellow glaze (黄釉, ōyū) Ōyū, or yellow glaze, is a traditional ceramic glaze that has been used in East Asian pottery for centuries. It is typically made from a blend of iron-rich clay and transparent glaze, which when fired at high temperatures results in a lustrous golden or amber surface. The exact tone can range from soft straw yellow to deep honey brown, depending on the firing conditions and the underlying clay. Yellow glaze is appreciated not only for its warmth and organic appearance but also for its strong connection to classical aesthetics. In Japanese ceramics, ōyū has been used in various regional styles and is often associated with a sense of earthy elegance and rustic refinement. The natural iron spotting and subtle tonal gradients that emerge in the firing process are highly prized in tea ceremony wares, as they embody the beauty of imperfection and transience. About Gorosuke Asami Ⅵ (六代浅見五郎助) Gorosuke Asami VI is a highly regarded Kyoto potter and the sixth-generation head of the historic Shonzui kiln (Shonzui-gama). Born in Kyoto in 1951 as the eldest son of Gorosuke Asami V, he completed formal training in ceramics at the Kyoto Municipal Industrial Research Institute before apprenticing under his father in 1972. He later spent time in Santa Cruz, California, teaching ceramics, which broadened his outlook while remaining firmly rooted in the Kyoto tradition. The Asami family kiln was founded in the mid-19th century in the Gojosaka area of Kyoto and became famous for refined blue-and-white ware in the “Shonzui” style, tea wares and utensils for the Japanese tea ceremony. Over generations, the Asami lineage has been recognized as one of the representative houses of Kyo-yaki. Gorosuke Asami VI inherited the name in 1987 and has since exhibited widely, receiving numerous awards at the Kyoto exhibitions and other shows. He is a member of the Kyoto Traditional Ceramic Artists Association. Working under the seal “Shonzui Gorosuke” / “Shonzui-gama Gorosuke Asami”, he produces a wide range of tea utensils – including tea bowls, sweets containers, water jars, incense containers, yunomi and vases – combining elegant, classical forms with a lively, modern sense of glaze and surface. In recent years he has passed the name of Gorosuke Asami VII to his son and taken the studio name Bokushou, but works bearing the signature “Gorosuke Asami VI” or “Shonzui-gama Gorosuke Asami” continue to be sought after by tea practitioners and collectors of contemporary Kyo-yaki.
