Tsuina is a ritual to drive away evil spirits and plague gods on New Year's Eve, or a demon-driving ritual that has been held among the general public on Setsubun and other days since the early Heian period. Tsuina was originally a Chinese event that was imported into Japan and eventually became an annual event at the Imperial Court. This event is the origin of the modern-day Setsubun bean-throwing ritual.
