Each piece features a tiered, gourd-like form and comes in a different tone — white, celadon, yellow, pink, and metallic silver with gold — expressing a playful and contemporary sense of harmony. The design reflects Sakata’s balance between traditional Mashiko craftsmanship and modern sculptural creativity. While conceived as art sculptures, these works can also be used as lampshades, creating a soft interplay of light and shadow through their rounded forms and textured surfaces. Mashiko ware originated in the late Edo period in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture. Known for its earthy texture, generous thickness, and warm tactile quality, it is one of Japan’s most beloved traditional ceramics, valued for its rustic charm and durability. Jinnai Sakata studied under Shoji Kamoda in 1964 and established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966. His career has included numerous exhibitions in Japan and abroad, exploring not only black pottery but also innovative works in glass, paper, and lighting design.
