Byōbu folding screen – Scene from The Tale of Genji – Japan – Edo Period (1600–1868) Lot. 99712879 【Product details】 This two-panel folding screen is mounted with four silk hand drawn paintings on a gold ground, combining elegant figure scenes with traditional bird-and-flower motifs. The upper pair shows seasonal beauties: on the right, women walking beneath blooming cherry trees in spring; on the left, ladies enjoying an autumn boat outing under vivid red maple leaves, one reading while another poles the boat. The paintings on this folding screen are from the Meiji period or later, while the mounting is from the Showa period. The lower pair presents finely detailed nature studies. One panel depicts three quails among white chrysanthemums and autumn grasses. The other shows a pair of mandarin ducks by a snowy waterside, a classic symbol of harmony and lasting partnership. Together they offer a concise, graceful overview of Japan’s four seasons. Fair to good condition with age-related wear. The silk paintings show rubbing, stains, foxing, some discolouration and a few small holes. The lacquered wooden frame has chips, scratches and wear, especially at the corners. The reverse backing is aged with discolouration and stains. The hinge area shows wear and slight gaps, and the fold line has a small tear, but the panels remain connected. Please check the photos for details. Dimensions when opened: approx.
