Amlash Terracotta Dekorierter Topf (Ohne mindestpreis)

A fine Amlash terracotta vessel featuring a globular body rising from a flat base and leading to a cylindrical neck with a wide mouth. The neck of the pot is decorated with subtle vertical lines. Two grooves encircle the mouth of the vessel just beneath the rim, and a line of engraved herringbone motif further enriches the pot at the base of the neck. Earthly encrustations and signs of wear as consistent with age, such as earthy encrustations, pitting and scratches to the surface. There is a large chip on the lip of the vessel. The term ‘Amlash Culture’, has generally been used to designate material cultures excavated at Gilan, an archaeological site on the south shore of the Caspian sea, and refers to a group of Iron Age pottery and metal executions with a strong visual character. Most of the Amlash pottery vessels are believed to have been stylistically and typologically inspired by bronze wares of the same period. Terracotta vessels of this type were clearly designed as storage vessels, but they might have been used in a particular funerary ritual and ceremonial occasion. Measurements: H 13.5cm x W 12cm Provenance: Ex. specialist Near Eastern pottery collection, London, 1990s. N.B. Delivery may be longer due to the busier period and we do not guarantee delivery before Christmas. Items paid for after the 19th December will be shipped after the New Year (week commencing on the 5th January 2026). **There will be an additional fee incurred for returned shipments due to buyer’s non-response to customs enquiries and/or unsuccessful delivery attempts.**
