Each depicts one of the twelve zodiac motifs: the Rat and the Tiger. The rat, symbolising wisdom, fertility, and prosperity, represents the beginning of the zodiac cycle and the spirit of renewal. The tiger symbolises courage, strength, and protection—long revered in Japanese culture as a guardian against misfortune. Both pieces are delicately crafted with soft, natural colours and refined brushwork, capturing Imai’s elegant style and exceptional technical mastery. Imai Masayuki was one of Japan’s most distinguished ceramic artists. He held the court rank of Jusanmi (Junior Third Rank) and received the Order of Culture. He served as Honorary Advisor of Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition), Member of the Japan Art Academy, and was designated a Person of Cultural Merit. He was also a Member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC). Each incense container bears the artist’s impressed seal on the base. The accompanying wooden boxes feature handwritten inscriptions and signatures with red seals, while the cloths also carry the artist’s seal. Minor signs of age and light wear consistent with careful use, but overall in good to very good condition. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions of Tiger Kogo: approx.
