Südamerika - Amazonasbecken; Samuel Fritz / Joseph Stöcklein - Strom Maragnon - 1721-1750
Strom Maragnon, Autore R. P. Samuele Fritz, é Soc. Iesu. Prov. Bohem. 1707. Delineatus. A historical map showing the Rio Maranon, or Amazon River, and surrounding areas, created by Samuel Fritz. With a decorative cartouche in the upper right corner and a compass rose over the Pacific Ocean at lower left. Verso blank.
Although dated 1707, when the map was first published by Fritz, this German-language version of the map comes from Part 5 of Neuer Welt-Bott by Joseph Stöcklein published in 1728. Fritz’s map has the distinction of being the earliest map of the Amazon produced by someone who explored a large part of the area. Fritz, a Jesuit from Bohemia, spent more than forty years carrying out his missionary work and exploring the Amazon river basin. The map shows forts and cities such as Bogota, Popayán, Pasto, Lima and others, and relief features are shown pictorially. Special notations on the map mark locations of the source of the Maragnon ‘as it is indicated on old maps’, and a further notation marks ‘die Insel Guar’ in the middle of the Amazon. The Jesuit IHS seal near the centre of the map highlights the area in which Fritz was most active.
The paper has a crease in the upper left corner, but is otherwise in very good clean condition, with one centre fold as published.
