A vibrant, tall two-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) titled “Sunset over the Distant Mountains” 遠山の夕日, by Watanabe Bunpei 渡辺文平 (1925–1998). The screen presents a striking view of a vast mountain range rendered in vivid orange tones, accented with red, black, and deep green. The peaks are lit by the last bright glow of the setting sun, while the valleys fall into shadow. The nearer slopes are covered with dense pine forests 松 (matsu), and at the front the canopy of autumn trees shows warm seasonal colours. On the far horizon, a dark moon rises, partially veiled by soft drifting clouds. Signed and sealed by the artist in the lower left corner. The reverse retains the original signed and sealed label, including the inscribed title. Executed in acrylic on board, set within a substantial wooden frame fitted with protective hardware. The reverse is lined with green silk. A heavy piece.
