Statue, Rare walnut figure of a Bishop, probably France, 15th century - 45 cm - Holz

Rare and impressive carved walnut figure of a Bishop, probably France, 15th century. A powerful late-Gothic sculpture depicting a Bishop in full liturgical attire, characterised by the tall mitre, expressive facial features and deeply carved drapery folds typical of French medieval craftsmanship. The figure retains traces of its original medieval polychromy a highly desirable and evocative feature that highlights its long devotional history. The piece shows extensive age-related worming and natural wear consistent with its great age. One forearm is lacking, exactly as described in the Christie’s catalogue. Despite this, the sculpture remains visually striking, with strong presence and remarkable historical authenticity. Provenance: Important Belgian Private Collection. Exhibited and at: Christie’s Amsterdam, Furniture and Works of Art, 15–16 December 2008, Lot 57. Described by Christie’s as: “A carved Walnut figure of a Bishop. Probably French 15th century. The forearm lacking, traces of polychromy, extensive worming.” A very rare opportunity to acquire a documented medieval sculpture with prestigious auction provenance an exceptional addition for both collectors of Early European art and serious decorators. Condition: expected medieval age wear, extensive worming, missing forearm, traces of original polychromy. Stable overall. Please refer to all photographs. Height: approx. 45 cm Carefully packaged and shipped with full tracking. Please note that we currently do not ship orders to the United States.
