Sitzender Shakyamuni Buddha – Brass-Figur, himalayanischer Stil, tibetische buddhistische Kunst - Messing - 21. Jahrhundert
A brass figure of quiet contemplation, embodying the serene presence of Himalayan devotional sculpture.
Description:
This seated brass figure depicts Shakyamuni Buddha in the bhumisparsha mudra (earth-touching gesture). The right hand extends downward over the knee to touch the lotus pedestal, while the left hand rests palm-upward in the lap in the dhyana mudra (meditation gesture). The figure is seated in vajrasana (diamond posture) with legs crossed upon a single lotus throne with downward-facing petals arranged in a continuous band around the base.
The Buddha's face displays refined, contemplative features: half-closed eyes beneath gently arched brows, an urna (third eye mark) at the center of the forehead, a subtle smile, and elongated earlobes characteristic of the Buddha's iconography. The hair is rendered as tightly coiled curls covering the ushnisha (cranial protuberance), surmounted by a small finial at the crown.
The monastic robe drapes over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and chest partially exposed. Incised lines indicate the folds of the garment, with geometric patterns decorating the hem and borders. The soles of the feet, visible at the front, bear incised decorative motifs.
The surface exhibits a warm patina ranging from golden-brass tones to darker oxidized areas, with visible wear on raised surfaces such as the face, hands, and knees. The back of the figure shows incised lines depicting the robe's draping, along with minor surface pitting characteristic of cast metalwork. The hollow underside reveals the construction typical of lost-wax casting.
Cultural & Art Context:
Bronze and brass images of Shakyamuni Buddha in the bhumisparsha mudra have been produced throughout the Himalayan region—Tibet, Nepal, and surrounding areas—for centuries as objects of devotion and meditation. The earth-touching gesture commemorates the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree, when he called upon the earth to witness his spiritual attainment. The stylistic conventions visible here reflect the rich sculptural heritage of Tibetan Buddhist art

Tibetan brass Buddhist sculpture appeals to collectors of Asian religious art, devotional objects, and those drawn to the contemplative traditions of the region. Figures depicting Shakyamuni in this iconic pose offer both aesthetic refinement and spiritual significance.
