Each piece features exquisite maki-e decoration over a lustrous nashiji ground, depicting a serene countryside scene with a rooster and hen tending to their chicks beneath blossoming chrysanthemums on a trellis. Some of the chrysanthemums are further adorned with raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay, adding a delicate iridescence that shifts with the light. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface. In Japanese symbolism, roosters and hens represent protection, diligence, and harmony within the family. Chrysanthemums are cherished symbols of longevity, beauty, and imperial grace. All five trays are structurally sound and remain in good condition with only minor signs of use and age. The undersides are also finished in nashiji, and each piece is stackable for compact storage. This beautiful and practical set is ideal for collectors of fine Japanese lacquerware or for elegant use in the home. Dimensions: approx.
