A Group of Arita Porcelain: Three Soba-Choko Cups, a Lobed Plate, and a Large Charger Japan, 18th–19th Century An attractive mixed group of Arita ware comprising a charger, a small lobed plate, and three soba-choko cups. The 18th-century charger features a central depiction of the Three Friends of Winter—pine, plum, and bamboo—symbolizing endurance and integrity. The cavetto is encircled by a finely painted spiral guri pattern. The underside bears an apocryphal Chinese six-character mark “Da Ming Chenghua Nian Zhi” (大明成化年製). The lobed plate, painted in a rich, deep cobalt blue, shows a floral design on the front typical of high-quality Arita ware from the period. The three soba-choko cups (19th century) display alternating panels of fruit and floral motifs, executed with fine detail. Each cup is marked to the base with the auspicious four-character phrase 春長富貴 (Shunchō Fūki), meaning “May spring endure, and may wealth and honour abound.” This blessing was commonly used on Japanese porcelain inspired by Chinese traditions.
