Hagi-yaki - 牧勇吉 Yukichi Maki - Teeschale - Ton - Traditionelle Hagi-Glasur

This is a handcrafted Hagi ware tea bowl (chawan) made by the Japanese ceramic artist Yukichi Maki (牧勇吉). With its soft beige glaze, iron-rich speckles, and signature kiln marks, the piece embodies the essence of wabi-sabi, inviting a tranquil and reflective tea ceremony experience. The warm, organic feel of the bowl is enhanced by the natural flow of glaze and subtle variations in color and texture. The foot of the bowl features the artist’s carved seal, and it comes with its original signed wooden tomobako (box), bearing both handwritten calligraphy and the red stamp of the artist. Although the cord of the box is missing, the condition of the item itself is excellent, with no cracks or chips. For tea lovers, collectors of Japanese ceramics, or those who appreciate authentic craftsmanship, this piece is a timeless and elegant addition to any collection. About Hagi Ware: Hagi ware (Hagi-yaki) is one of Japan's most respected traditional ceramics, originating in the early 17th century in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Introduced by Korean potters under the patronage of the Mori clan, Hagi ware became highly prized by tea masters for its understated beauty and tactile appeal. Key features include: Soft, muted glazes in beige, white, and pink tones. Visible clay texture and glaze dripping effects. Fine crackles (kannyu) that absorb tea over time, enhancing the bowl’s character—a process known as “the growing of the bowl.” Hagi ware is traditionally ranked as one of the top three wares in the tea ceremony world: “First Raku, second Hagi, third Karatsu.” About the Artist – Yukichi Maki (牧勇吉): Yukichi Maki is a Japanese ceramic artist dedicated to preserving and evolving the Hagi-yaki tradition. Though detailed public records of his career are limited, his works are found in tea ware collections and specialty auctions, particularly admired for their faithful adherence to Hagi aesthetics. His signature style includes: Use of warm, sandy Hagi clay with a refined glaze. Traditional shaping and carving methods. Artist's seal impressed on the base. Signed wooden tomobako accompanying most of his works. This tea bowl is a fine example of Maki’s dedication to traditional craftsmanship and subtle expression. Size: Diameter: 13 cm Height: 9 cm The condition is very good with no noticeable scratches or stains. [About Shipping] This item will be shipped from Japan.
