Arsenios Kotteas - Extremely Rare Publication, Nikosia/Cyprus - Mount Athos - Anti-Gregorian Calendar Treatise – With - 1922
Original and extremely rare early Greek-Orthodox publication, printed in Lefkosia in 1924, titled Ο Επηγγελμένος και Προσδοκώμενος Χριστός (The Promised and Expected Christ).
A remarkable theological and historical document relating to the intense debate surrounding the adoption of the Gregorian calendar by the Greek Orthodox Church.
Authored and published by:
Arsenios Kotteas (Αρσένιος Κοττέας, 1881–1978) – Athonite monk, writer, and theologian, who sought to explain to Orthodox believers the doctrinal, liturgical, and historical problems caused by the introduction of the Gregorian calendar.
Content & Structure
Under the main title, three subtitles appear on the cover:
Η προφητεία και η ιστορία (Prophecy and History)
Η επαγγελία και η πλήρωσις (Promise and Fulfilment)
Η Παλαιά και η Καινή Διαθήκη (Old and New Testament)
The work combines biblical exegesis with ecclesiastical history and presents the author’s objections to the Gregorian calendar reform. Kotteas argues that even astronomers disagreed, and warned the Pope against altering the traditional reckoning.
Tables & Additional Material
Included in the book are:
3 calculation tables to help the faithful determine correct feast dates in the Orthodox ecclesiastical cycle.
A full calendar for the year 1926, serving as a practical tool for liturgical use.
Such utilitarian material was usually printed in very small runs, contributing to the rarity of surviving copies.
