Kanban (Geschäftsschild) - Lackiertes Holz, Eisen - Japan - Um 1900 – Meiji-Zeit
A very rare, large oblong kanban 看板 (shop signboard) advertising Seikaigan 清快丸, with identical design on both sides.
Seikaigan 清快丸 is the name of a late-19th to early-20th century Japanese patent medicine produced by Takahashi Seidaidō in Osaka. It was a small pellet medicine, similar to Ninjin (仁丹), used for many common ailments.

Set against a polished black lacquer ground, the signboard is decorated with carved and gilded characters, along with the colourful lacquer depiction of the dog.
Along the right side runs the inscription:
“An effective remedy for restoring vitality, dispelling toxins, relieving stomach pain, acid reflux, and hangovers.” 氣附毒消腹痛 溜飲二日酔の良劑
Along the left side:
“Main distributor: Takahashi Seidaidô Pharmacy, Shijimi-bashi, Dôjima, Osaka.” 本舗 大阪堂島蜆橋髙橋盛大堂藥局
