DO X - A Vision Too Big for the Ground
In the roaring heart of the 1920 s, when aviation was still a daring dance with the clouds, Claude Dornier, a visionary German engineer, dared to dream the impossible: to build the largest aircraft the world had ever seen. The result was the Dornier Do X, a colossal flying boat with twelve roaring engines, a wingspan rivaling a football field, and the elegance of an ocean liner in the sky.
Luxury in the Skies
Unveiled in 1929, the Do X wasn’t just a plane—it was a floating palace of ambition. With space for over 150 passengers, leather armchairs, a dining salon, and even a smoking lounge, it was aviation luxury before its time. But Dornier’s dream wasn’t just size—it was about conquering oceans.
A Journey Across the World
In 1930, the Do X took flight on a breathtaking transatlantic journey from Germany to New York, stopping in the Netherlands, Spain, Africa, and across the Atlantic via Brazil and the Caribbean. Crowds flooded ports to witness the futuristic leviathan. After a triumphant welcome in New York, the aircraft eventually returned to Germany—its engines tired, but its legend just beginning.
