A very large antique samurai doll 武者人形 (Musha ningyô) featuring the legendary samurai Minamoto no Yoshitsune 源義経 (1159-1189), renowned for his martial prowess. Seated on a shôgi 床几 (traditional samurai folding stool), he dons a richly detailed golden and silver yoroi (armor) over a multi-coloured kimono adorned with a cloud and dragon design. The front of his chest piece with a crest of a sinous dragon coiling in a circle between clouds. His helmet (kabuto) features an elaborate maedate (decorative front piece) representing the sun, moon and clouds. He also holds a signal baton (saihai). Yoshitsune’s features are meticulously crafted, noble white skin achieved through multiple applications of gofun 胡粉, a fine white pigment made from the powdered shell of the itabo oyster (Ostrea denselamellosa). Handpainted delicate features and reverse-painted inlaid eyes. Minamoto no Yoshitsune 源義経 (1159-1189) was a legendary Japanese general of the Minamoto clan during the late Heian period. Celebrated for his strategic brilliance, Yoshitsune was pivotal in the Genpei War, leading his clan to victory against the rival Taira family. His military exploits have immortalized him in Japanese history and culture as the epitome of a heroic figure. Despite his prowess and loyalty, his relationship with his half-brother Yoritomo deteriorated, leading to his tragic and untimely death. Period: Japan – Late Edo period. Considering its age, the doll and the costume are in a good condition with wear conform age, like wear of fabric and active loss of hair, which is quite common for dols this age.
