玉舎春輝 Tamaya Shunki (1880–1948)
Tamaya Shunki, also known by the studio name Gagyūan (臥牛庵), was a Japanese painter active in the Kyoto art circles during the late Meiji and early Shōwa periods. Born in Gifu Prefecture, he first studied Yamato-e under Hara Zaizen and later trained with Yamamoto Shunkyo, one of the leading figures of modern Japanese painting. Shunki exhibited successfully at the Bunten (Ministry of Education Art Exhibition) and later joined independent groups such as the Japan Free Painting Association and the Kōjinsha, reflecting his pursuit of artistic freedom beyond official academies. His works range from landscapes and historical scenes to floral and bird subjects, characterized by refined color harmonies and strong compositional balance. Remembered as a versatile mid‑level painter of the Kyoto school, Shunki’s art embodies both traditional literati sensibilities and modern exhibition culture.
with signature 'Shunki' 春輝 and seal 'Gagyuan' 臥牛庵
This refined hanging scroll by Tamaya Shunki (1880–1948) depicts a praying mantis standing alert among softly swaying autumn grasses, a subject traditionally associated with focus, stillness, and the changing seasons. The composition is quiet yet expressive, with subtle color gradations and controlled brushwork that reveal Shunki’s grounding in Kyoto painting traditions as well as his sensitivity to natural motifs. Signed “Shunki” and bearing the seal “Gagyūan,” the work is preserved with its original wooden storage box (tomobako), enhancing both its authenticity and historical presence.
