Item Description This is a set of two handcrafted wooden kokeshi dolls by Sekiguchi Toa, a renowned artist from Gunma Prefecture, Japan, and recipient of the Prime Minister’s Prize. The doll on the left is titled "Princess Kaguya" (かぐや姫), inspired by the legendary figure from the Japanese folktale "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter." It features a calm facial expression and a kimono decorated with textured gold, orange, and green patterns. The doll on the right is titled "Izayoi" (十六夜), referring to the sixteenth night of the lunar calendar in traditional Japanese culture. This piece depicts a serene figure in a black kimono adorned with motifs of autumn grasses and geometric designs. Both dolls show visible craquelure and wear due to age, including scratches, paint loss, and surface marks, especially on the back and sides. Each doll bears the artist’s seal on the base. The Japanese names refer to traditional cultural motifs: “Kaguya-hime” is a folktale princess, and “Izayoi” represents the beauty of the waning moon.
