MAMMOTRECTUS E LA POVERTÀ DI FRANCESCO : LO SPIRITO DEI SEMPLICI NELLA MISTICA MEDIEVALE
Strumento di illuminazione per l’anima e di istruzione per la mente, il Mammotrectus super Bibliam del seguace di S. Francesco, Giovanni Marchesinus è un’opera emblematica della pedagogia spirituale tardo-medievale. Non un semplice glossario né un puro trattato di grammatica, ma una guida a orientarsi tra i misteri del testo sacro, pensata per i chierici poveri, i lettori inesperti, gli spiriti umili. 
Questa preziosa edizione veneziana del 1485, stampata da Franciscus de Madiis, testimonia l’ultimo respiro dell’enciclopedismo francescano prima dell’irruzione dell’Umanesimo. Bella legatura monastica coeva che lo consacra non solo come reliquia tipografica ma come oggetto vivo di trasmissione spirituale.
MARKET VALUE
Il Mammotrectus figura tra gli incunaboli più emblematici della pedagogia religiosa pre-umanista. Le edizioni veneziane sono estremamente rare sul mercato, specie se complete. Un esemplare con caratteristiche simili e provenienza prestigiosa può valere tra i 10.000 e i 18.000 euro. La legatura coeva, la presenza di note manoscritte e l’associazione con collezioni bibliografiche note come quella di Mander e Borgström accrescono significativamente il valore culturale ed economico del volume.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION - COLLECTOR'S COPY
Bellissima legatura monastica coeva in mezza pelle su assi lignei, con una cerniera metallica in parte superstite. Testo su due colonne, 39 linee per pagina, carattere gotico. Il foglio A2 restaurato al margine inferiore con lieve perdita di testo. Annotazioni manoscritte in inchiostro bruno di epoca coeva su più carte. Alcuni capilettera rubricati in rosso e blu. Esemplare strutturalmente solido, ben conservato, dall’aspetto genuino e vissuto. Carte 242.

CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE
Composto sul finire del XIV secolo, il Mammotrectus rappresenta uno degli ultimi grandi tentativi di sistematizzare in modo accessibile il sapere sacro. Marchesinus, francescano reggiano, riunisce nozioni di grammatica, lessico biblico, etimologie, storia sacra e dottrina in un unico compendio destinato ai chierici con scarsa formazione. L'opera si struttura come un'enciclopedia teologica a uso pastorale e didattico, ricca di spiegazioni morfosintattiche e di riferimenti agli usi liturgici e allegorici della Scrittura. La sua fortuna editoriale fu lunga e vasta, riflettendo la permanenza delle esigenze educative pre-umaniste nel clero rurale e negli ordini mendicanti. L’edizione veneziana del 1485 è una delle pochissime testimonianze dell’interesse veneziano per questo genere di testi a fine Quattrocento. Stampato da Franciscus de Madiis, libraio attivo a Rialto, questo incunabolo rappresenta l’incrocio tra pietà medievale e nascente tipografia mercantile.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR
Giovanni Marchesinus (attivo tra la fine del XIV e l’inizio del XV secolo) fu un frate minore con base a Reggio Emilia, appartenente alla corrente francescana più attenta alla diffusione della cultura religiosa tra i ceti bassi. Il suo Mammotrectus super Bibliam è l’unica opera attribuitagli con certezza. Impostato su modelli didattici scolastici, rivela una solida cultura grammaticale, teologica e omiletica. Lo scopo dell’autore era rendere intellegibile il testo biblico anche ai chierici meno colti, contribuendo alla diffusione dell’istruzione religiosa in ambienti marginali.

PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION
La prima stampa del Mammotrectus fu realizzata nel 1470 a Magonza da Peter Schöffer. Seguirono numerose edizioni a Colonia, Strasburgo e Venezia. L’edizione veneziana del 1485, qui descritta, fu pubblicata da Franciscus de Madiis, tra gli stampatori attivi a Rialto. Classificata dal Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke come M20823, questa tiratura mostra una fase matura della ricezione del testo in area italica. Carattere gotico, assenza di rubricatura tipografica, ma presenza di note manoscritte coeve. Con l’affermazione dell’Umanesimo e l’arrivo della Riforma protestante, il Mammotrectus venne progressivamente emarginato, sopravvivendo come testimonianza di una pedagogia profondamente legata al monachesimo e alla devozione popolare.
