Gilbert Méténier Art Pottery Vase – Flowing Blue Glaze, France, c. 1920–1930

This striking ceramic vase by Gilbert Méténier perfectly captures the elegance and artistic spirit of early 20th-century French decorative arts. Its sculptural silhouette, with graceful twin handles and a balanced architectural form, reflects the transition between the flowing organic lines of Art Nouveau and the more structured aesthetic that would later define Art Deco.

The vase is distinguished by Méténier’s celebrated running glaze technique, where vibrant cobalt-blue glaze cascades organically over a warm ivory body. Each flow is unique, creating a sense of movement and spontaneity that transforms the surface into a work of art in itself. The contrast between the rich blue tones and the soft cream background gives the piece a remarkable visual presence while maintaining a refined sense of harmony.

Equally appealing is the vase’s characteristic satin finish, a signature feature of Méténier ceramics. Smooth and velvety to the touch, the surface possesses a subtle softness that enhances both the visual and tactile experience of the piece. This understated finish allows the glaze effects to remain the true focal point while lending the vase an exceptional sense of quality and craftsmanship.

More than a decorative object, this vase is remarkably versatile. It can serve as a statement piece in a contemporary minimalist interior, blend effortlessly into an eclectic setting, or complement collections dedicated to authentic early 20th-century ceramics. Its timeless form and sophisticated palette make it as relevant today as it was a century ago.

Gilbert Méténier was one of the most respected French ceramicists of his generation, active during a period when French art pottery enjoyed international recognition. Working in Gannat, central France, he became renowned for his distinctive forms, innovative glaze effects, and refined decorative sensibility. His work is highly sought after today by collectors of French Art Nouveau and Art Deco ceramics.

The vase also represents an important artistic lineage. Gilbert Méténier followed in the footsteps of his father, Louis Méténier, founder of the family pottery. Building upon the techniques and reputation established by Louis, Gilbert developed the workshop into one of the most recognizable names in French art pottery, creating pieces whose flowing glazes and satin surfaces remain instantly identifiable more than a century later. Today, the Méténier name stands as one of the enduring dynasties of French ceramic art.
