L’opera raffigura la Vergine Maria seduta, avvolta in un manto blu trapunto di motivi geometrici dorati, mentre sorregge sulle ginocchia il corpo esanime di Cristo. Ai lati, due figure dolenti – probabilmente San Giovanni Evangelista e Maria Maddalena – partecipano alla scena. Sullo sfondo, la croce dorata si staglia contro un cielo notturno cosparso di stelle, incorniciato da un paesaggio stilizzato con alberi e rocce.

Il linguaggio formale è caratterizzato da:
Colore: blu profondo e verde scuro, tipici della tavolozza smaltata;
Decorazioni in oro: tratteggi e motivi ornamentali applicati a freddo;
Figure: rigide, frontali, con volti stilizzati e simmetrici, memori del gotico internazionale;
Iconografia: ripresa dei modelli quattrocenteschi diffusi in Francia e nelle Fiandre.

L’opera si inserisce nella produzione ottocentesca (o precedente) che, in piena temperie romantica, rivalutò il Medioevo come epoca di spiritualità e purezza artistica. In particolare, a Limoges – città che già dal XII secolo era stata il maggiore centro europeo di smalti – si sviluppò nel XIX secolo una fiorente produzione revivalista, destinata tanto al mercato antiquario quanto alla devozione privata.

Unique Objects

Occasionally, two different bidders may show up in the bidding history with the same bid amount. This occurs when one user's bid is exactly the same as an automatic (maximum) bid placed by another user earlier. Since the auto-bid was placed first, this takes preference. The bidding history will show both bids, with the auto-bid ranked as the higher of the two.


Double bid

It may appear that the same bid has been placed by two different bidders. This can occur if someone places a bid in another currency which is then rounded to the same amount as the previous bid in %{local_currency}.
