Parmi la sculpture animalière africaine, ce masque se référant au buffle sauvage apparaît en clôture des cérémonies d'initiation chez les Yaka et leurs voisins. Il symbolise la puissance et l'esprit de vengeance. Egalement associé aux rites curatifs, ce masque participe aussi aux rituels liés à la chasse. Située au Congo Démocratique entre les Yaka et les Tchokwé d'Angola, la petite ethnie Holo a migré de la côte angolaise pour s'installer près des rives du fleuve Kwango. La chasse et l'agriculture assurent leur subsistance. Les ethnies voisines, telle les Suku et Yaka, ont influencé leurs sculptures traditionnelles. Les Holo ont en effet produit des masques heaumes et des objets de prestige pour l'élite dirigeante. Les Holo faisaient usage de sculptures afin de se prémunir contre l'influence de mauvais esprits, dont celui de la lune et de l'arc en ciel. Ces statues étaient disposées près des habitations comme protection contre les éclairs. Les figures d'oiseaux sont également utilisées pour se protéger contre les ndoki, ou sorciers, qui activent les esprits méchants.
