Peugeot Type 144 Torpedo (1914) in good overall conditions.

-Big imposing edwardian vehicle

HISTORY
This very interesting unit was sold new in the province of Jaén in Andalucía, Southern Spain. It received the number plate "J-91" which means that it was the 91th vehicle ever registered in that province. The date of the first registration is 14th august 1914, but apparently the chassis was sold on 20th March 1914. The first owner was a Manuel Muñoz Villar from the village of Torredonjimeno, and the car had other two different owners between that date and 1918. 

One of the most unusual and interesting features of this unit is its beautiful bodywork, which was created in period by the workshop "Miguel Berro" of Jaen, as is credited by the brass badge still fitted to the bodywork. Miguel Berro was at the time the official dealer for the brands Michelin, Ford, Renault and Hispano-Suiza, and seems obvious from where he took the inspiration to create the bodywork of this Peugeot, which could be easily confused with a Hispano Suiza of the type T-30, the biggest of this mythical brand in the last 1910s.

The car was found in very original conditions in the 1960s decade, still in the province of Jaén. Apparently the car was secretly kept inside a garage without the wheels in order to avoid requisition during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). There is a black and white photo of the moment in which the car was taken outside (please see photo gallery). The car was totally restored during the 1960s by its new owner, and later the car took part in many pioneering rallyes of Spain. In the bodywork there are many brass badges of these rallyes, the oldest from a 1970 Rallye Madrid-Benidorm-Madrid.

The car was last used some 15 years ago, and since then it has been stored in a dry and safe place until recent times.

BODYWORK
The "Miguel Berro" bodywork seem to retain all its original features and equipment in general. There are many scratches here and there in the paint and the brass parts would benefit of a polish, but the car could be left as it is, with all its charm and nice patina.

INTERIOR
The luxurious interior is very original, and many leather parts seem to be the original ones. In general the leather would need a hydration. The wood is in very good overall conditions, including the beautiful marquetry work. In the dashboard there are two non original gauges, fitted in the 1970s. Were made also two "tonneau covers" for the drivers and passengers space, and even a nice steering wheel cover. The hood is partly broken and needs restoration of the leather and some of the woods, please see the photos.

MECHANICS
The car was fired up the last time some 15 years ago, so its real conditions are currently not know. Anyway, the big four cylinder engine turns free easily with the crank handle, and every screw cap can be easily opened. Even the old oil seems to have little use and is very clear (see photo). Were installed a modern alternator and electric starting motor when it was restored in the 1960s. The brakes are not blocked and the car can be pulled easily. The direction also turns easily and doesn´t seem to have ease. In general everything seems greased and functional, but the car is sold as seen in the photos, in not running conditions.
