Inspired by Australian Aborigines from West Arnhemland. Arnhemland was distinct in Aborignee art up until the fifties because figurative art was being made in caves and on bark, In the rest of Australia the more abstract 'desert art' was in vogue, which was based on song lines and paths in the desert where the walkabout took place. The figurative art of Arnhemland was characterised by 'x-ray' art, where you could see the insides of many animals, as well as 'mimi' art where you could see moving mimis. Mimis are fairy-like beings, who lived in rocks, the cracks of the rocks are the entry-ways into their homes. This is a predecessor, that in fact is part of x-ray art..
