FONTANA, Roberto

Nacque a Milano il 10 apr. 1844. Abbandonati gli studi classici, s'iscrisse all'Accademia di belle arti di Brera, dove frequentò i corsi di incisione di A. Bramati e i corsi di pittura di G. Bertini e di C. Notaris. Esordì nel filone della tradizione del romanticismo storico presentando l'opera Geltrude confusa scorge la lettera in mano al principe suo padre, tratta da I promessi sposi, alla XXV Esposizione della Società promotrice di belle arti di Torino del 1866 (catal., p. 14) - Si rivolse presto tuttavia anche a soggetti di genere: all'Esposizione di belle arti di Brera del 1872 (catal., p. 53) presentò il quadro Ispezione alla persona della fidanzata. costume russo, che gli valse l'apprezzamento di C. Boito (1877) e una notevole popolarità attraverso numerose riproduzioni oleografiche.

Fu grazie alla produzione di quadri di genere che il F., autore di soggetti storici, piccoli paesaggi e ritratti, conquistò il favore del pubblico del suo tempo. La rappresentazione di situazioni e affetti della vita quotidiana e familiare, resi con una certa compiacenza illustrativa e connotati da un'intonazione intimistica e accentuatamente sentimentale che risente della pittura di T. Cremona, caratterizza la produzione del F., la cui popolarità fu in larga parte dovuta alla sua rispondenza alla concezione borghese dell'arte del secondo Ottocento. Fu influenzato dall'ambiente della scapigliatura milanese e in particolare dal Cremona, del quale riprese il luminismo sfumato ma non la tecnica impulsiva, a colpi di pennello, servendosi piuttosto della tecnica a colori "impastati" in uso presso alcuni seguaci del pittore. Ebbe anche una produzione, meno nota, di incisioni all'acquaforte: tra queste sono ricordate Ritratto di donna, Ritratto d'uomo, Donna che legge (Comanducci, 1971).
