Diagonale Reihung” (1974) is a characteristic example of Günther Uecker’s exploration of rhythm, structure, and space. It belongs to his series of white embossed prints in which he does not work with color, but instead with light, shadow, and the tactile quality of the surface. The print is created using the Prägedruck technique (embossed printing), which does not apply ink but forms the image by pressing the motif into the paper.

The title “Diagonale Reihung” (“diagonal sequence”) refers to the repeated diagonal elements that generate a visual rhythm and a sense of movement. Uecker’s typical use of simple geometric structures feels remarkably dynamic due to the interplay of light and shadow. The embossed surface shifts depending on the viewing angle and lighting, giving the work an almost kinetic quality — though the image itself is static, it appears to move.

Within the context of Uecker’s body of work, this piece embodies his interest in reduced form, material presence without color, and emotional tension through structure. At the same time, works like this set him apart from traditional painting or graphic art — placing him closer to object-based and conceptual art.
