THE STEEL CLAW (1962 - 1973).
Published in the Valiant magazine, at the time of the first appearance of Louis Crandell/Lewis Randell, alter ego of the Claw, he was a hardened criminal. Crandell is a young laboratory assistant who is forced to wear a steel prosthesis in place of his right hand after an accident. Following another accident, Crandell becomes completely invisible except for his claw. Instead of fighting crime he decides to rob a bank and plots to become the master of the world. Kenneth Bulmer, writer of the series, was inspired by: “The Invisible Man” by Wells. A year after the start of the series, Bulmer was replaced by Tom Tully, and the Claw turned into a more traditional hero who would face increasingly strange criminals. But the real strength of the comic lies in the hyperrealistic pages by Jesus Blasco, which give it a credibility not always deserved by the stories. Towards the late sixties Blasco left the series, with its consequent worsening. His return in 1971 coincided with the happiest period of the comic. The Steel Claw was published throughout Europe, mainly thanks to Blasco’s plates and the famous image of the hand without a body.
