Inami Sculpture Traditional Craftsman/Former

Born in May 1935 in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture.

Studied under the late Ichiyama Gyokuko. Specialized in carving floats for shrines, temples and Buddhist temples, he has worked on carving the inner sanctum of the Meiji Shrine main hall and other shrines, temples and Buddhist temples around the country, as well as the floats at the Hida Takayama "Matsuri no Mori" Museum.
Born in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture in May 1935. Certified as a traditional craftsman in 1975. Received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette in 2008.

Inami carving is characterized by its advanced woodworking techniques, which are three-dimensional and dynamic. More than 200 chisels and carving knives are used to carve the sculpture from both sides, creating a deep openwork carving that symbolizes the craftsman's sophisticated skills. Inami carving is said to have begun in the 18th century, during the mid-Edo period. Inami is the name of the area that is now Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, and it was originally home to highly skilled carpenters. At the time, Maekawa Sanshiro, an official sculptor for Kyoto's Honganji Temple, was dispatched to Inami to rebuild the main hall of Zuisenji Temple, and local carpenter Banshoya Shichizaemon IX and others joined in, learning carving techniques from Maekawa Sanshiro, which is said to be the beginning of Inami carving. The "Chrysanthemum Gate" of Zuisen-ji Temple's Imperial Envoy Gate and the "Lion's Child Drop" on either side of the gate, created in 1792 (Kansei 4), are representative works of the ninth generation of Banshoya Shichizaemon and are known as masterpieces in the history of Japanese sculpture.
During the Edo period, carpenters also served as sculptors and made a living from temple sculpture, but in the Meiji period, many became full-time carvers due to their high level of skill and artistic quality. The work also expanded from decorative sculpture of temples to include transoms for homes, and became popular among the general public.
In the Taisho period, in 1915 (Taisho 3), the first generation Oshima Goun's work "Shoin Ranma" was exhibited at the San Francisco World's Fair and won an honorary gold medal. Around this time, Inami carvers began training many disciples, and the number of people working in the field increased significantly.

加賀獅子*　Kaga-jishi is a traditional performing art handed down in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture. In 1965 (Showa 40), it was designated as an intangible folk cultural property by Kanazawa City. Since ancient times, lion heads have been widely used as lucky charms to ward off evil spirits and misfortune, and have been widely used in furnishings and celebratory gifts.It is said that each town council had a lion head as a guardian for each town, and competed to see how luxurious it was.
When displaying a lion head in an alcove, a sword is placed in the lion's mouth. In this case, it is customary to point the blade of the sword inward during celebrations, and to point it outward when praying for victory.
