Sabine Marcelis est motivée par aller au cœur d'un concept ou d'un matériau. Ses créations ont souvent une qualité minimale afin de mettre en valeur les propriétés et les effets spécifiques des matériaux utilisés. Son travail est défini par cette sensibilité aux matériaux - elle espère que ses créations créeront « un moment d'émerveillement » et susciteront une réponse émotionnelle et un engagement curieux chez les spectateurs. Elle croit que grâce à la rencontre de l'art et du design fonctionnel, l'art devient moins « intouchable » et peut être vécu par un plus grand nombre de personnes.

Pour sa contribution à IKEA ART EVENT 2021, Marcelis s'est inspirée des toiles lacérées du peintre italien Lucio Fontana et a voulu traduire ce geste simple - une coupure à travers une surface - en un luminaire. «Je pense qu'une grande partie de l'inspiration vient de l'action», dit-elle, et le design de ses appliques murales IKEA est né de l'expérimentation du pliage et du découpage du papier. Elle considère que les appliques murales, disponibles en deux tailles différentes et pouvant changer de cinq couleurs différentes, sécartent de ses conceptions d'éclairage habituelles, où elle travaille avec de la lumière blanche traversant différents matériaux (souvent transparents). En revanche, ses lampes IKEA explorent les merveilleux effets créés par une lumière dynamique émanant d'une seule surface solide. Selon le designer, leur fonction est de créer une atmosphère dans la maison - ils peuvent changer l'ambiance de n'importe quel espace.

La designer Sabine Marcelis, née en Nouvelle-Zélande et basée à Rotterdam, est fascinée par les propriétés uniques des matériaux et par les effets que certains matériaux peuvent créer - par exemple, la résine ou le verre interagissant avec la lumière. Sa pratique est axée sur les processus: ses créations émergent d'une expérimentation approfondie d'idées et de matériaux en studio.
