Né Maurice Martin en 1863, à Boulogne-sur-Mer et mort en 1926, à Varennes-Jarcy, Martin Van Maele est considéré comme l'un des illustrateurs érotiques les plus saillants. C'est le bibliophile Luc Binet qui a entrepris cette première étude d'envergure. Sous la forme d'un catalogue raisonné, il nous est donné à voir et à découvrir la production singulière et convulsive de ce graveur hors pair, auteur notamment de La Grande Danse macabre des vifs ou du Cauchemar d'un nouveau riche. Abondamment illustré, l'ouvrage est complété d'un volumineux index, qui nous permet de nous plonger dans les eaux troublantes de l'édition marginale et clandestine des curiosa du début du XXe siècle.
