Wolfgang Tillmans

Wolfgang Tillmans
Art Publishing/2014/Japanese/185*258*13

A collection of works by Wolfgang Tillmans, a globally renowned photographer representing Germany and a multi-disciplinary artist. Centered on artistic depictions utilizing 90s-era fashion culture, portraits, and still lifes, Tillmans—who gained a following among younger artists—challenged himself with various experimental expressions through the medium of photography after 2000. This volume, rich in narrative elements, compiles a series documenting his deepening and evolution into an artist now classified within “contemporary art.” The first 40-plus pages consist of illustrations concisely summarizing Tillmans' evolution since 2000, with editing and layout handled by Tillmans himself. The remainder comprises a “Tilman discourse” spanning over 120 pages, including an interview by Berlin-based journalist Miki Kainai, an essay titled “Refrain and Scattering” by Minoru Shimizu, and an introduction to Tilman's publications by Shimizu himself.
